Edema Symptoms and Home Remedies for Swollen Feet

Edema, also known as hydropsy or dropsy is a disorder where fluid accumulates in the tissue’s in the body and causes swelling. It can affect any part of the body though it tends to affect the hands, ankles and feet. Edema affects millions of people worldwide, especially in the united states.

Symptoms of Edema

Some classic indications of edema include.

  • Swelling.
  • Stretched skin.
  • Puffiness.

Home Remedies for Edema

1. Dandelion

The herb dandelion acts as natural diuretic and thus encourages the draining of fluid. It also has potassium. which helps balance out sodium in the body. This in turn helps reduce swelling and inflammation.
Mix one teaspoon of fresh or dried dandelion leaves in a cup of hot water. Cover, steep for five to seven minutes and strain it drink two to three cups of dandelion tea every day.

2. Coriander seeds

Coriander seeds are also useful in edema treatment. The anti-inflammatory property of coriander seeds can reduce swelling and pain. Plus, these seeds encourage good blood circulation.
Mix three tablespoons of coriander seeds in one cup of water. Heat it to a boil, then simmer until the water reduces by half strain and allow it to cool. Drink this two times a day until the symptoms are gone.

3. Flax seeds

According to ayurveda, flax seeds are an effective remedy for edema. The anti-inflammatory property of flax seeds can help reduce swelling. Moreover, flax seeds aid in detoxification, which means they help get rid of harmful toxins.
Add half teaspoon of ground flax seeds to a glass of warm water. Drink it two times daily.

4. Exercise and Physical Activities

those who lead a sedentary lifestyle are more prone to edema. Exercise and other physical activities can help prevent it as well as reduce the intensity of symptoms when edema occurs. Move the muscles in the affected body part as much as possible. This will help dissipate the fluid out of the tissues. Enjoy jogging or brisk walking for 30 minutes.
Go swimming several times a week to reduce edema symptoms. You can also consult your doctor about exercises you can do that may reduce swelling.

5. Reduce Salt Intake to treat  Edema

High salt intake puts you at a higher risk for edema. High amounts of sodium contribute to water retention in the tissues. Health experts recommend eating less than 2300 mg of sodium daily. However, talk to your doctor about the specific amount of sodium you should be taking every day.
Limit your intake of salty foods, such as prepackaged snacks and fast food.

For swelling in the lower limbs, soak your feet in warm water for about five minutes, then soak in cold water for about 30 seconds. Repeat three times daily for the best results.  You can use a cold compress to alleviate swelling on the feet due to pregnancy.

For edema in the hands or arms, rest your arms above the level of your heart for about 30 minutes, three times a day.

For leg Edema, use pillows to raise your legs above the level of your heart for 30 minutes, a few times daily.

Stop smoking and excessive drinking to prevent edema.

Use compression stockings, sleeves and gloves to keep pressure on the limbs and prevent fluid from collecting in the tissues.
